“I just couldn’t have been going as fast as the cop said.”

Oh? You mean that you’re modern car that has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph just couldn’t have been going 75 in a 50? Or do you think that that cop had something personal against you and decided that he’d risk fabricating an elaborate tale and radar-gun data to prove that you were going 25 over when all the while you were driving the speed limit?

Maybe their speedo was out of whack? Or the cop caught them as they passed or something and they never realized they went that high?

I drive a 60hp twingo, 75mph takes time to acheive so I may have a case :D

I actually got out of a ticket doing this. Driving a 1991 4cyl wrangler with 30" tires. The Jeep couldn’t physically go the 75mph the officer clocked (I think it might have been the Honda next to me). The look of triumph on my face when I heard something over 70 may have convinced him I was legit.

The top speed of the Jeep literally depended on where the wind was coming from. With strong (40 mph) winds I sometimes couldn’t get above 55. That thing was a piece of junk, but I sure do miss it.

I got pulled over for doing 71 in a 60. My speedometer and GPS both read 64. I’ve used that GPS in several other vehicles, and unless every other vehicles speedometer is that off, he was wrong. Did not get a ticket. I told him he was wrong. I don’t think he thought I would admit to speeding. He was just picking a number that sounded reasonable.

In high school, a friend of mine got out of a ticket by proving that his car (02 Elantra 5 speed at the time) could not get to 60mph by the point he was pulled over after turning left from the stoplight his gf lived off of.

Yeah, usually I think it’s a bs excuse, too. But in his case, his car was not capable.

My dad actually got out of a ticket when he proved his then-car (a beat-to-hell 86 Town Car) literally couldn’t reach the speed the officer claimed he was doing.

I don’t provide excuses, I take my medicine. With that said cops in my area don’t pull over unless over 10 over. Actually in a lot of cases more than that.

My dad had an interesting one back in the mid 90's. Our van had a transmission failure at around 30,000 miles. After it was replaced, he got popped for 71 in a 55 while his indicated speed was around 59. After unsuccessfully arguing, he did some timing with a stopwatch and mile markers, confirmed it was reading low and took it back to the dealer. Turns out that they had put the wrong transmission in. The thing used a variant of a common sedan transmission that had either different gearing or a shorter final drive to handle the extra weight of the van. Since the van had a mechanical speedo, that caused it to read high. Getting another replacement took about a month with a Neon as a loaner (not what you want if you own a van). We paid the ticket and never took the van back to that dealer.

I recently got a ticket, and everyone that knows me says the same thing when I tell them I got a speeding ticket, “ what you, you never speed.”

I had just been passed by an SUV that was still right in front of me, slowing down from the pass when the police came into view. When I saw the police officer I checked my speed, which indicated 61 in a 55. However every time I have cross checked my speedometer it consistently reads 3mph fast, so the officer should have been seeing 58mph, within the 5mph variance.

When the officer stopped me, he said he clocked me going almost 70. What his definition of almost is I’m not sure, but he wrote the ticket for 65 in a 55. Since radar (yes the ticket show he measured my speed with a radar gun, not LIDAR) just displays the speed of the strongest signal, and often the larger vehicle he probably was measuring the speed of the vehicle that just passed me. That vehicle would have had the entire front and part of the side exposed to the radar signal, I would have been mostly shadowed by the vehicle in front of me.

So yeah, there is no way I was going that fast. Too many far fetched explanations to come to that conclusion, when the simple one is that the car that just passed me and would have presented a bigger radar signal was speeding.

The problem is, I've never had good luck with judges, so I'm hoping I get an acceptable deal from the prosecutor, or a first in my lifetime experience of a judge that does not railroad me.

An old roommate had a 4 cylinder, 5 speed wrangler. He had to downshift to climb moderate grades at highway speeds and by the time he got to the top he’d be about 10 under the speed limit.

After looking at the responses, I think there are a number of valid responses as to why someone may not actually be speeding (radar clocking a different vehicle, faulty speedometer after a repair, etc.).

But I think what “I couldn’t have been going that fast” really means is “I wasn’t paying attention to how fast I was driving and refuse to believe it was fast enough to warrant a ticket.”

I once had a cop pull me over, he asked me if I knew why, and I said no. I kind of assumed I was speeding because I hadn’t been looking at my speedometer and had been pacing traffic. The cop was extremely irritated and kept asking me “Do you know why I pulled you over?” “No sir” “You don’t have any possible idea?” “No sir” “You really can’t think of a reason as to why I would pull you over” “No sir”

Eventually he gave me a warning for doing 80 in a 65. Now I’d love to say “I couldn’t possibly have been going that fast” but the truth is I don’t know because I didn’t really look at my speedo, so I just have to accept the officer’s word for it.

I tried that once and found out that it was a kangaroo court. Basically dealing with a criminal organization. Speeding tickets were the main source of income for the town and they simply pulled over the next car on that road that they saw after releasing the former, claimed it was 9 over, and sent them on their way. It was right after a series of 5mph drops on a road designed for 45, and this was right after the 30mph point, except I had to stop, so I was simply the first in line and they like to grab you when you’re doing under 20 because it is less risky. They had the audacity to step out into the middle of the road with a clipboard with a stop sticker on the back...

Mind you, it’s the only undeserved speeding ticket I’ve received.
